Michael F. Dahlen holds great expertise in civil trial and appellate litigation. His history includes chairmanship of FMGRís appellate practice group and has approximately 40 years of litigation experience at both the trial and appellate levels. His expertise emphasizes insurance defense, including, among many areas, medical malpractice, products liability, premises liability, and coverage issues.
Mr. Dahlen was the former research director and court administrator for the Illinois Appellate Court, Fifth District. He has been a frequent speaker and author on trial and appellate practice and has published over 22 articles on civil litigation, appellate practice, and insurance matters which have appeared in the Illinois State Bar Journal, various law reviews, chapters in the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education handbooks and various Illinois State Bar Section Council newsletters.
Mr. Dahlen has been retained by other law firms, medical providers, municipalities, and insurance companies to handle litigation at the appellate and supreme court levels. He has handled over 120 appeals before various state appellate and supreme courts in the Midwest. Cases that he has argued before the Illinois Supreme Court have resulted in the creation of, or change in, civil law in Illinois.
Mr. Dahlen has been an active member or officer of several section councils for the Illinois State Bar Association, including the Civil Practice and Procedure, Insurance, Tort Law, and Worker's Compensation Section Councils. He has served on various special ISBA committees including the Merit Selection of Judges and Illinois Appellate Practice. Mr. Dahlenís membership history includes the following: Defense Research and Trial Lawyers Association, Illinois Association of Defense Trial Counsel, the Appellate Lawyers Association (where he was a former member of the board of directors) and Illinois Healthcare Attorneys. He is recognized in the National Registry of Who's Who and the Leading Lawyers Network in the area of civil appellate law.
Mr. Dahlen believes trial and appellate litigation is governed by three principles: responsiveness, preparedness, and thoroughness. Michael Dahlenís professional credo has long included the following: a) Timely and detailed communication with the client is critical in all aspects of handling any case; b) Preparation is the key for success; c) Each case deserves thorough preparation before it is presented before a trial or reviewing court; and finally, e) thoroughness is required not only in the factual investigation and preparation of a case but also in the legal analysis.
